Ideas From the Speckle Retreat Hackathon

Speckle Retreat & Hackathon

This October, we packed our bags, fired up Google Maps, and headed south to the rolling hills and vineyards of Alentejo, Portugal, for our latest Speckle retreat.

The plan: five days of hacking, brainstorming, and a healthy dose of paintball battles.

The Speckle Hackathon

Our second internal hackathon challenged us to rethink what Speckle is — and could become — for the future of the AEC industry. Here are some of the standout projects, starting with the popular vote winner.

Winning Hack: Speckle Lens

The team built Speckle Data Lens, a new way to simplify data analysis in the Speckle Viewer — making automation and visualisation seamless for both developers and non-developers.

What they built:

  • Data Lens UI – a new frame for visualising data
  • Material Analysis Automation – real-time insights powered by Speckle Automate
  • Interactive Visualisation – charts that dynamically filter model elements
  • Model Grouping – custom viewer behaviour to sort elements by criteria

How it works:

  1. Add a visual to the viewer
  2. Automate runs in the background
  3. Data is processed and results appear instantly
  4. Users can interact, filter, and explore

Why it matters:

  • Effortless automation with no setup required
  • Real-time, interactive visualisations
  • All-in-one platform, no PowerBI needed
