Meet ShapeDiver for Speckle
ShapeDiver for Speckle combines interactive Grasshopper 3D model sharing with Speckle’s powerful data hub, improving collaboration and data management across the AEC ecosystem.
What’s the Big Deal About ShapeDiver?
ShapeDiver is an online platform that allows Grasshopper users to share, interact with, and commercialise parametric 3D models.
ShapeDiver bridges a key gap for industries like AEC, product design, and manufacturing, where software limitations and licensing restrictions often prevent the sharing and collaboration on complex parametric models.
By enabling Grasshopper models to be published and shared online, ShapeDiver helps users achieve:
- Mass Customisation: Tailoring products or designs to individual client needs in industries like bespoke manufacturing or architecture.
- Collaborative Design: Empowering teams to work together on complex parametric workflows without needing identical software setups.
- Commercialisation: Allowing designers to create configurators that can be shared or monetised directly with clients or customers.
This product-market fit makes ShapeDiver a natural ally for Speckle’s mission to improve data collaboration in the AEC industry.
ShapeDiver: What’s New with Speckle’s Integration
With Speckle’s integration, ShapeDiver users now gain full access to the Speckle AEC data hub.
This unlocks advanced data management and exchange capabilities while still keeping the flexibility that ShapeDiver provides.
ShapeDiver users can now harness Speckle’s capabilities as both a read and write resource, which means:
- Feeding Client-Specific Configurations: Import configurations directly into Grasshopper via Speckle.
- Exporting Results: Push ShapeDiver outputs back into Speckle for use in tools like Revit, Rhino, or analysis software.
- Access to AEC Data Hub Benefits: Leverage Speckle’s selection of integrations to ensure data created in ShapeDiver isn’t siloed but can be shared, analysed, or visualised elsewhere.
This means your data and workflows are no longer siloed. ShapeDiver and Speckle together streamline your parametric workflows and connect you to the broader AEC ecosystem.
The ShapeDiver team handled most of the integration work, while Speckle made key adjustments to ensure compatibility and improve Grasshopper-to-Speckle workflows in other environments. These updates streamline workflows for all Grasshopper users, no matter the platform.
Enough Talk: Time To Try It Yourself
You can now import any file format compatible with Rhino, select geometry from the file and send it directly to Speckle!
This example model uses an Import Geometry component to import any CAD file types supported by Rhino.
You can also configure a simple twisted tower in the browser and, here as well, send the configuration to Speckle at the click of a button. The received objects can be exported as a 3dm file or a drawing (DWG/DXF) file.
These two examples are available to you as public apps that anyone can open and start using immediately to hack your workflow!
ShapeDiver x Speckle: This is Why This Matters
ShapeDiver is fantastic at sharing and collaborating on parametric Grasshopper-based workflows, while Speckle takes it further, as a hub that connects these workflows to the broader AEC ecosystem.
Together, they break down data silos, enabling effortless collaboration and data-driven design.
“It was a pleasure working with the Speckle team to get this connection working! Data can now flow seamlessly between the Speckle data hub and ShapeDiver-powered web applications. And we are looking to take it further and enable ShapeDiver automations to enhance Speckle models. Stay tuned!”, Alexander Schiftner, Co-founder and CTO at ShapeDiver
ShapeDiver Integration as Validation of Speckle’s Approach
ShapeDiver’s integration is another example of how Speckle can be embedded into platforms to enhance functionality and drive interoperability across diverse systems.
As Speckle reaches more industries and workflows, the platform’s open and collaborative approach continues to gain traction beyond traditional AEC use cases.
More vendors, services, and system integrators are reaching out to collaborate, validating Speckle’s strategy and ability to meet diverse user needs.
Ready to Get Started?
If you’ve been waiting for this integration, now is the time to try it. Contact us or the ShapeDiver team with questions or ideas—we’d love to hear how you plan to use this.
This is just the beginning of a more connected future for parametric design. Let’s make it happen together!
