Speckle projects get a new home and pricing plans
Learn what's changing, why now, and what you'll need to do to keep up!
It has been five amazing years since Speckle became your free, open-source data hub—no limits, no paywalls.
As more of you rely on us (with over 620,000 models or over 1.9 billion walls, windows, beams, and other objects stored!), our costs have grown tremendously.
To keep improving—faster connectors, even better 3D viewer, analytics, and automation features—we’re making two important changes:
- All projects are moving to workspaces (replacing personal projects).
- We're introducing limits to support sustainable growth and adding a free Viewer seat.
It’s not just about keeping things afloat; it’s about scaling Speckle to help you work better together and shape a more connected future for our industry.
Keep reading to get a clear breakdown of what’s changing and how it affects you!
Here's what’s changing for your projects
Workspaces are now the default way to use Speckle. Seven months after launch, they’re becoming central to how teams collaborate. This means that, starting one month from today, all new projects must be created inside a workspace. Existing projects outside a workspace will remain editable until the end of this year, after which they’ll be archived and become inaccessible.
Workspaces make Speckle better for teams of any size, with advanced administrative features to manage projects and members and enterprise-level security such as data residency, domain protection, and single sign-on (SSO).
What you’ll need to do:
- Create or join a workspace (it only takes a minute).
- Move your existing projects into a workspace to keep them live and editable.
- Projects left outside workspaces (personal projects) will be subject to the Free plan limits (1 project, 5 models, 7-day version and comment history) as of June 1st and, by year’s end, will become archived.
Don’t worry—there’s no overnight deadline. You have time to transition, and we’ll guide you through it step by step!

What's changing with pricing
We’ve designed the new Speckle plans to match how teams actually use Speckle:
- You only pay for Editors (teammates who publish/load data with connectors).
- Viewers are free! Clients, reviewers, or anyone just viewing models in the 3D viewer and commenting won’t cost a thing.
The new plan breakdown:
Free
- Ideal for personal use: 1 project, 5 models.
- Limited version & comment history (7 days).
- Everything stays safe—if you upgrade later, you’ll see your full history again.
Starter ($9/editor/month)
- Great for small teams: 5 projects, 25 models.
- Longer version & comment history (30 days) to keep track of changes and get deeper insights into your project.
Business ($49/editor/month)
- For bigger teams: 10 projects, 50 models
- Ideal if you need advanced security: full version & comment history, domain protection, SSO, and data residency options.
- This plan is all about giving you peace of mind and maximizing productivity. For an additional $500/month, you can add extra data regions to meet your needs.
Fair limits to projects and models have been added to all our plans. If you are on a Starter or Business plan, you can upgrade to unlimited projects and models with the $15/editor/month add-on.

Self-hosting? Still free!
Nothing changes if you prefer to run your own server—self-hosted Speckle remains 100% free and open-source. (Note that all the perks of workspaces, like security automation features, are only available on the Speckle-hosted version.)
Your next steps:
1️⃣ Get into a workspace: Create or join one to keep your projects fully editable.
2️⃣ Move your personal projects: Migrate them into a workspace before usage limits kick in on June 1st.
3️⃣ Pick a plan: Choose the one that fits your needs, or stay on Free if that works for you.
Below, you’ll find a more detailed guide to make this transition smoother! Have questions? Reach out anytime—we’re here to help.
Thanks for trusting Speckle. Together, we’re building a better future of AEC.
FAQ about workspaces
I'm already a customer, what happens next?
If you are an existing customer, we have already reached out to you to discuss migration options, if not, please send us an email.
When do I need to move my projects?
Starting June 1, 2025, all new projects will need to reside within a workspace to be fully editable.
You can move your projects into a workspace at any time—there's no need to wait. Your existing projects outside a workspace will remain editable only until the end of this year; after that, they’ll be archived (and inaccessible). We'll remind you as the archiving date approaches, but making the change early gives you more time to adjust comfortably.
How do I move my projects into a workspace?
- Go to your Personal Projects page.
- For each project, click the Move button.
- Select an existing workspace or create a new one if needed.
Are you already inside a project? The Move button is easily accessible there, too.
Why should I move my projects into a workspace?
Moving your projects into a workspace will keep them live and editable, while projects left outside will be subject to Free plan limits and, by year’s end, will be archived.
Workspaces are the new default way of working in Speckle. It allows you to easily assign roles (admin, member, guest) and manage permissions, ensuring you have full control over who can view or edit your projects. It gives you a lot of powerful security perks as well as access to automations. It’s all clearly explained here!
What happens if I don’t move my projects?
If you don’t migrate your projects, nothing changes immediately. However, your personal projects will face usage limits on the Free tier on June 1st and will be archived (view-only) by the end of the year.
Can I be part of more than one workspace?
Absolutely! As you work with different teams or companies, you can get invited to join different workspaces or create them yourself. This way, your projects are neatly separated and safe.
What are the roles people can have in a workspace?
Admins can manage the full workspace, including all projects, settings, billing, and members.
Members are typically your co-workers on various Speckle projects. They’re individuals within your company or organization who may be required to have a valid company email address to join a workspace.
Guests are typically external collaborators. You invite them into your workspace on a project-by-project basis. As they use an external company email, they won’t undergo the same strict authentication process as internal collaborators.
What are the seat types in a workspace?
People in your workspace can be assigned either an Editor seat or a Viewer seat:
The Editor seat (which can be paid) grants a user permission to contribute to a project by publishing and loading data using Speckle connectors. Members in an Editor seat can also create new projects in the workspace.
The Viewer seat (always free) gives a user permission to view and comment on models in the web viewer.
Why can’t I find the Automate buttons in Speckle?
Because automations are available only on projects stored in a workspace. As soon as you’re in one, Automate (beta) will be at your fingertips again!
Where can I get more help with this transition?
We’re here for you! Feel free to contact us in the Speckle Community Forum anytime with your questions or reach out directly at feedback@speckle.systems.
My workspace is on a Free trial. How does this change affect me?
Your free trial will automatically convert to a Free plan with no time limit.
FAQ about new pricing
What stays free?
You can keep using Speckle in the Free plan:
- Ideal for personal use: 1 project, 5 models.
- Limited version & comment history (7 days).
Also, self-hosted Speckle remains 100% free and open-source!
I have a lot of projects and models. How much do I have to pay?
We’ve got you! That’s why we’ve created the unlimited projects and models add-on you can use whether you’re on the Starter or Business plan.
If your priority is working on a lot of projects and models: Choose the Starter plan ($9/editor/month) with the unlimited projects and models add-on ($15/editor/month). Your full monthly price for having endless projects in Speckle will be $24/editor/month.
If your priority is version and comment history or security: Choose the Business plan ($49/editor/month). That way, you still get a large number of projects (10) and models (50), and more importantly, you unlock the full version & comment history, domain protection, SSO, and data residency options.
Keep in mind, you can activate the unlimited projects and models add-on ($15/editor/month) while you’re in the Business plan as well!
Why are you limiting free use now?
So much data: Hosting so many, many projects (more than 620,000) isn’t free, and we want to keep innovating (not just keep the lights on).
Your feedback: You’ve asked for stronger security, more automation, and better team controls—workspaces deliver all that.
Our mission: We stay open-source (self-hosting is free!) but our hosted version needs resources to grow alongside your needs, and make AEC better.
Can I use Speckle as an individual?
Yes, of course! You can continue to explore Speckle on the Free plan (1 project, 5 models, and limited version and comment history for 7 days) or upgrade to the Starter plan for more freedom—even as an individual Speckler—with 5 projects, 25 models, and extended version and comment history for 30 days.
What does “pay only for editors” mean?
You only pay for users who actively publish or load data using Speckle connectors; we refer to these as Editors. Anyone who simply views models or leaves comments in the 3D viewer is free—think clients or senior executives in your company who want a quick overview of the progress. Those seats are called Viewer seats, and are free and unlimited.
How do I upgrade my Free plan?
Go to the Billing page in your workspace settings. Once there, you can Subscribe to the Starter or Business plan depending on your needs.
How do I upgrade my Starter plan?
If you’d like to stay in the Starter plan, but need more room for your projects and models, you can use an add-on to get unlimited projects and models for an additional $15/editor/month add-on.
Keep in mind, this does not provide a longer version or comment history. To unlock unlimited history, jump into the Business plan for $49/editor/month.
Is anything changing for self-hosted Speckle users?
Not at all. Self-hosted Speckle remains 100% free and open-source. Workspaces and Speckle Automate are exclusive to our hosted version, though.
